This study aims to evaluate the impulse excitation technique (IET) as a preliminary dynamic characterization tool for hybrid composites, investigating the structural viability of partially substituting synthetic reinforcements with natural fibers. The methodology encompassed the manufacturing of epoxy matrix laminates in three configurations — carbon (C), sisal (S), and carbon/sisal hybrid (CS) — which were subjected to non-destructive mechanical characterization via IET for a rapid assessment of their vibrational signatures and elastic moduli. The results visually and numerically established the dynamic boundaries with the pure matrices, revealing that the CS hybrid configuration exhibited transitional parameters, with a dynamic modulus of 30 GPa and a wave propagation velocity of 6488 m/s. Such data prove that the hybrid retained a significant portion of the carbon's stiffness, mitigating the prolonged resonant response of the sisal. It is concluded that the IET acts excellently as a preliminary screening mechanism to qualify the suitability of new hybrid formulations under severe mechanical demands, allowing the validation of the stiffness-damping balance and the optimization of structural designs prior to the execution of costly destructive tests.
