Thermally regenerated prepurifier systems to remove H₂O, CO₂ and other trace contaminants from the feed air stream to air separation plants can be optimized through the judicious selection of solid adsorbents installed in these systems. Specifically, a combination adsorbent bed of Alcoa F-200 activated alumina (at bed inlet for H₂O removal) and 13X molecular sieve (at bed exit for CO₂ removal) is widely installed in air plant prepurifier systems due to technical and economical advantages over a complete bed of molecular sieves. The paper will discuss adsorption technology as well as detail the advantages of a combination bed of activated alumina and molecular sieve to purify the feed stream to air separation plants (cryogenic separation/recovery of O₂, N₂ and noble gases). In addition, the advantages of recently developed alumina based selective adsorbents for CO₂ removal from air streams in PSA (pressure swing adsorption) and VSA (vacuum swing adsorption) modes will be detailed. Technical services available from Alcoa’s Adsorbents and Catalyst Division will also be discussed.
