Among the common industrial gases, only O2, and to a lesser extent NO and NO2, are paramagnetic (large, positive magnetic susceptibility). All the others are diamagnetic (small, negative susceptibility). When a paramagnetic substance is placed in a non-uniform magnetic field it will be attracted to the strongest part of the field. On the other hand, a diamagnetic substance will seek the weakest part of the field. A quick look at a list of the magnetic susceptibility for the most common gases suggests the magnetic methods as the most promising for oxygen analysis.
