Energy Balance and energy saving techniques of mizushima works

Resumo

Following the first and second oil crises, Mizushima Works of Kawasaki Steel Corporation implemented a comprehensive energy conservation program aimed at reducing the specific energy consumption of crude steel production. The program combined improvements in energy-saving technologies with the effective utilization of by-product gases, including blast furnace gas (B-gas), coke oven gas (C-gas), and converter gas (LD-gas). Major initiatives included the transition to all-coke blast furnace operation, expansion of continuous casting, optimization of the plant energy balance, and replacement of oil-based fuels with internally generated process gases. These measures resulted in a significant reduction in overall energy consumption and a substantial decrease in oil dependency, enabling the steelworks to operate almost entirely on coal-derived energy sources. The paper describes the evolution of the plant's energy management strategy, gas distribution system, and by-product gas utilization techniques that supported the achievement of a highly efficient and nearly oil-free integrated steelmaking operation.
