Abstract
The industrial gas industry was 105 years old in 2000, dating from the patent for the air separation process which Dr. Carl Linde, the author's great-grandfather, received in June, 1895. This paper outlines two parallel threads, technical and economic, which led to the first liquefaction of air on a substantial scale. The further steps by Dr. Linde, Georges Claude, and others which resulted in the increasingly economical production and distribution of the pure constituents of air, as well as some of the early applications which led to volume increases in the industry, are briefly described.
